I know you might have been hearing about semantic search and semantic web these days. Actually these “semantics” are not new concepts but it is just starting to gain popularity and its significant roles are recognised. One should understand that semantic search and semantic we are not threats to SEO, rather, they enhance SEO strategy.
Semantic Search and Semantic Web: Understanding its Difference
Semantic search refers to the process of writing something to search engine and achieving more results instead of getting exact keywords that one writes into the search box. The process extends beyond matching keywords or phrases. It shall consider different aspects:
- The meaning of the word or words in their proper context;
- Its location;
- Opinion of other searchers towards the piece of information;
- The reliability of the writer as the source of information; and
- Freshness of the information
When the user searches using word or words, Google provides some results that are based on the encoded text or keywords placed in the search engine. Generally, Google will give you their best SERPs or search engine page results. Google “determines” the relationship between the words, how they perform together, it tries to comprehend the meaning of those words. It understands that site and cite have different meaning. It also understands that when one mixes key and word together, it alters the meaning.
According to Cambridge Semantics, Semantic Web refers to some technologies that are utilised to store, represent, and ask for information. Generally, semantic web involves numbers and dates to answer complicated questions. While semantic search targets words or text, semantic web draws information or data from different sources and formats.
Semantic web does not store page as a single page. It works to draw every small detail on the page and get these small details from each page to get the best consistent answer.
So what is this semantic SEO? This is a strategy that optimizes websites for semantic search. It performs similarly with the keyword-based SEO but with semantic SEO, it goes beyond the keywords. It provides similar terms, synonyms, and modifiers for the word or words users have in mind. Then, use these terms in the context the user wants, in heading 1, and heading 2 tags, and the title.
Semantic search and semantic web are not threats to SEO, rather they optimise the functions of SEO. SEO is not dead. SEO is to stay to optimise websites for better usability and visibility.
